This pair takes inspiration from the corset. A garment used for centuries to attain the idealized image of a small waist. As a symbol of confinement, the long strap wraps around the ankle, all the way beyond the toe.
In this pair, eyelets are a key component. These small, metal rings are a technical innovation from the 19th century. It allowed for ‘tight lacing’ of the bodice. Meaning, a woman’s waist could be further constricted and deformed. Essentially compressing the internal organs below. The feeling of restrained is emphasized with laces, buckles and straps.
